Advocacy in the Time of Tariffs
Advocacy Bulletin – April 16, 2025
The Supply-Build Canada team has been busy following the issues impacting the industry and working to share this information with various stakeholders.
During the past few weeks:
- Kevin Lee from CHBA and Jim Tobin from NHBA joined our podcast to help educate members on the housing market in both Canada and the US and the impacts tariffs and duties will have.
- Don Humphrey from Sexton Group joined us to discuss tariffs and opportunities Canada has in the chaos.
- Liz, with the support of some members, participated in meetings with the Global Affairs Softwood Lumber Division, and attended the Montreal Wood Convention to connect with industry partners and discuss key issues facing the industry.
- Liz spoke with local and national media outlets on tariffs, current lumber duties (which will double to 30% in the next few months), and our Buy Local campaign highlighting our dealer members in good standing.
The key takeaway without question from all these discussions is the need for a softwood lumber agreement. The Canadian government must recognize the importance of this industry and the negative impacts on the economy if we don’t get to the bargaining table and move forward in the right direction.
Later this month, we are kicking off our annual Parliamentary Days meetings and will provide updates on the meetings with provincial officials and the findings from our most recent economic impact study.

Catch Up with Across the Yard
Jim Tobin President & CEO of the National Association of Home Builders (NAHB) and Kevin Lee CEO of the Canadian Home Builders Association (CHBA) join Liz to discuss the current climate of affordable housing and the direction it's heading both in Canada and the United States.
Tariffs, duties, building codes, are just some of the items on the immediate horizon that will impact the economy and housing affordability. Tune into this in-depth episode to gain insights on both a Canadian and American point of view.
The looming uncertainty around tariffs continues to cast a shadow over the industry.
After weeks of speculation and accusations aimed at Canada, many anticipated sweeping tariffs would be announced on April 2. While Canada and Mexico were left off the initial list, there’s no real sense of relief — and plenty of questions remain.
As a business, it’s impossible to chart a course when the road map continues to change.
In this episode, Don Humphrey joins Liz Kovach to unpack where things stand now, explore what could unfold next, and highlight potential opportunities for Canada amidst the turbulence.
