Canadian businesses face a converging threat picture that few boards have priced into their risk registers. Organized cybercriminals, state-sponsored operators, and a rising cohort of young, English-speaking threat actors are now operating against Canadian manufacturers, hospitals, financial institutions, and the defence industrial base. The boundary between geopolitics and the balance sheet no longer holds.
This session examines four interlocking risks: ransomware and supply chain compromise driven by criminal syndicates, the youth-led extortion crews behind recent retail and telecom breaches, the operational consequences of armed conflict abroad, and disinformation campaigns aimed at Canadian institutions and shareholder confidence. Drawing on field research into youth cyber criminality and recent incidents across critical infrastructure, the discussion moves from threat narrative to helping organizations align security controls against business risk and Canadian regulatory expectations.

About Ian Trump

Ian Thornton-Trump CD a Military and Law Enforcement veteran with 30 years of experience in threat intelligence, geopolitical risk, enterprise security, and consulting leadership. He served in the Canadian Forces Military Intelligence Branch (1989–1992), later joined Canadian Forces Military Police Reserves in 2002, and retired as Public Affairs Officer in 2013. Shortly after, Ian co-founded Octopi Managed Services Inc. located in Winnipeg and has steadily grown the company over the years into a team of five full-time employees and two part-time contractors. Overseas in the UK Ian is a fractional CISO at Inversion6, leading I6's UK/EU expansion and bringing advanced threat intelligence and security operations expertise to large and enterprise organisations.
