Title: Designer, Engineered Wood Products We are actively looking for Advanced Designers who have experience in one or more of the following areas: Wall Panel Design, Floor Joist Design, Roof Truss Design.

Location: 292109 Prime Close, Rocky View County, AB (behind the Century Downs Racetrack/Casino in Balzac). This is not on a bus route. Or
Location: 3735-8th Street Nisku, AB. Designers may be based in Calgary or Edmonton.

Job OverviewL Reporting to the Design Manager, Star Building Materials, Calgary as the Designer, Engineered Wood Products, you are responsible for creating the structural framework that supports roofs, ceilings, and walls in buildings. You may work with light metal plate connected wood trusses for roof and floor applications, prefabricated wood I-joists and structural composite lumber (SCL) in an engineered wood products (EWP) design and manufacturing environment.

Your day-to-day responsibilities will include:
• Managing design work schedule to ensure jobs are completed on time.
• Creating computer models using computer-aided design (CAD) software. Developing optimized customer standard models that are cost effective, shop efficient and framer friendly.
• Reviewing and interpreting customer-supplied documents, such as blueprints or drawings, to identify if any areas require clarification. (You may meet with clients to discuss project details and design specifications).
• Completing fabrication ready designs for residential home structures.
• Implementing design changes and communicating with other related departments to ensure designs are accurate and consistent.
• Reviewing constructability of the projects and identify opportunities for value engineering.
• Preparing fabrication packages for production department, and site packages for installers.
• Supporting other projects or duties as assigned.
• Promoting a safe work environment and ensure compliance with Qualico’s Safety Program, policies and procedures.

Essential Requirements:
• Post-secondary education or technical training courses in Engineering, Architecture or Drafting.
• Related construction industry experience can be valuable.
• 1 year of drafting and design experience in the construction industry preferred.
• Proficient in both part 9 and part 4 building codes.
• Knowledge of building codes, construction methods, design principles, and building materials.
• Skilled in multiple technical disciplines of roof trusses, floor trusses and i-joists for complex structures.
• Valid driver’s license and access to a reliable vehicle.
• Satisfactory verification of criminal record check.
• Comfortable using Microsoft Office programs (Outlook, Word, Teams, SharePoint, PowerPoint and Excel) drafting and industry design software (Mitek, AutoCAD, Revit, AutoDesk,) or similar.

Preferred Requirements: Previous experience in lumber and building materials industry and having a basic understanding of wood frame construction practices is a strong asset.

Work Conditions: You primarily work in an office setting during regular business hours. Travel to sites and overtime may occasionally be required.
